Usually anyone over the age of 18 in the household will impact on the council tax, and a full council tax bill is based upon at least two or more adults living at a property.

Some people, including apprentices, are not counted or are ‘disregarded’ when determining how many adults live in the property, meaning that you may be able to apply for a discount.

You may be able to receive a Council Tax discount if an apprentice lives in your property. Apprentices earning or in receipt of the National Minimum Wage for workers to whom the apprenticeship rate applies can be disregarded during any period in which they fall within the definition of an apprentice.

For Council Tax purposes, you are considered an apprentice if you:

are aged 16 to 18 and undertaking an apprenticeship, or
are 19 or over and in the first year of a qualifying apprenticeship, and
earn no more than the apprenticeship National Minimum Wage.
